Posting self hosted software every day until we have communities - Day 4 - FreshRSS
Hi, it’s me. Your favorite Digg user. Day 4, let’s talk FreshRSS, a self-hosted RSS reader that puts you back in control of your feeds without the bloat of commercial apps. Scrolling social media for news can introduce you to things you hadn't seen or known about before. That's great. FreshRSS on the other hand pulls in articles from your favorite sites: blogs, news outlets, niche forums, or any site at all if you want to really get into the weeds and build out custom RSS feeds. This all culminates into one interface where you can catch up quickly. It’s lightweight and keeps your data on your own hardware so no one’s snooping on your reading habits. You can organize feeds into categories, like tech or hobbies, and it supports filtering to eliminate spam or uninteresting content. Grab posts with specific keywords or skip paywalled sites. On mobile, it’s got support for iOS and Android, plus browser extensions to quick-add feeds as you build out your instance. For power users, FreshRSS plays pretty well with automation. You can write a python script to scrape and import feeds from obscure sources or use its API to push articles to other apps. It's up to you. Something I thought was pretty cool was pairing it with a tool like Change Detection to create a custom self-hosted RSS feed (https://changedetection.io) to then push updates to FreshRSS when a page adds new content to specific areas that I want to know about. All in all, it's not the flashiest selfhosted application, but it’s reliable and does exactly what you need without the clutter of social media. Keep your info diet yours.
