White House says at least 8 US telecom firms, dozens of nations impacted by China hacking campaign
A White House official revealed that at least eight U.S. telecom firms and numerous nations have been affected by a Chinese hacking campaign, with potential access to communications of senior U.S. officials.
China-linked cyber-espionage campaign that breached global telecom networks to harvest call logs, texts, and metadata. The intrusions remain active in many systems and are probably the most significant compromise of communications infrastructure worldwide ever. All of your regular (unencrypted) calls SMS texts are essentially exposed and quite possibly being recorded/transcribed/harvested. I get that the world is chaotic right now (by design), but how is this not a much, much bigger deal? Encrypted coms (e.g., FaceTime, Signal, iMessage) and encrypted in transit/at rest emails like Gmail are ok, it’s just regular calls and texts.
