Fiddler crabs are hoovering up and breaking down microplastics - study
A recent study published in Global Change Biology reveals that tiny fiddler crabs, despite their small size, are ingesting and breaking down microplastics in highly polluted mangrove forests in Colombia. These crabs, which thrive in these environments, can break down plastics faster than sunlight and waves, but researchers warn this ability may release harmful nanoplastics into their tissues and the food chain.
