M5.9 solar flare triggers radio blackouts across Earth
A moderate M5.9 solar flare erupted from the Sun on Friday evening, marking a return to elevated solar activity after a relatively quiet week, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.
The flare, which peaked at 22:22 UTC on November 28, originated from a newly emerging sunspot designated AR4294 that is rotating into view along the eastern limb of the Sun. The burst reached R2-Moderate status on the radio blackout scale, causing brief disruptions to high-frequency radio communications on Earth's sunlit side, potentially affecting aviation, marine operations, and amateur radio users.
