Poll: Democrats have biggest advantage for control of Congress in 8 years
A recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals significant challenges for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with Democrats holding a 14-point advantage over Republicans in the congressional ballot, their largest lead since 2017. President Trump's approval rating stands at 39%, the lowest since the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, and 60% of respondents believe his top priority should be lowering prices. Additionally, 60% blame congressional Republicans or Trump for the government shutdown, and there is widespread disillusionment with both major political parties and key institutions, including Congress, the media, and the Supreme Court.
