Opinion: Europe should embrace the idea of going it alone
In his Financial Times opinion piece, Martin Sandbu argues that Europe should move toward geopolitical independence rather than continuing to seek alignment with or concessions from the United States under Donald Trump. Sandbu contends that as the cost of ingratiating the European Union with Trump’s administration rises, the strategic rationale for maintaining traditional dependence on the U.S. diminishes. He suggests that while Europe possesses the necessary economic and political tools to be a self-sufficient global power, it is currently held back by a lack of self-belief. Ultimately, the article advocates for a "going it alone" strategy, asserting that Europe must embrace its own sovereignty to better protect its interests in a fractured global landscape.
