A very serious question to active duty (or recently separated) military from an old lady

I hope this is allowed here, if not please remove with my apologies. I also understand most of you will probably not answer because of potential backlash. It's ok.

I am a widow of an army vet and it has been a hard thing to watch. In some ways, I'm glad my beloved is no longer on this earth to see this. I hope to join him soon, if I'm being very honest.

I have a question for current or recently separated active duty. Please be respectful in your replies, as this question comes from my heart. If you feel the need to start stirring the pot, please don't. I can't take much more of that nonsense.

Years ago, I would never in a second have believed I would be seeing what I am seeing today. Regardless of your beliefs, seeing an untrained paramilitary group in ANY US city given blanket permission to beat, murder and terrorize immigrants and citizens alike would have been laughable. But here we are, and things keep escalating. The last straw for me was the horrific murder of a VA nurse yesterday. A man who selflessly served people like my husband and died trying to protect a woman being brutalized in the street. I understand some won't see it that way, and that's fine. It's not my business to try and change your mind here.

But I am so scared. We were never blessed with children and my lifelong friends have mostly passed over the years, so I am trying to make sense of this without the benefit of anyone I know in the service. And I am so terrified of what will happen to us in the years to come.

My husband retired and passed many years ago, and so many things have changed since then. My question to you active duty, are we safe from YOU? I can see which way Trump and Hegseth are trying to steer us, and I wonder; has the military brass changed so much in these years that they would agree to follow orders to impose martial law on their fellow Americans at the whim of a mentally incapacitated tyrant? Would active duty personnel and their leaders open fire on civilians who are trying to exercise their constitutional right to protest? I saw the faces of the generals during Hegseths ridiculous speech to them some months ago, and it gave me hope. But now, I just don't know and I am so frightened. My husband used to say that there are secret internal military leadership that would never let that happen, but I don't know anymore.
