Is there such a thing as altruism?

Hopefully this is relevant, if not feel free to take it down. I realize I'm not breaking any ground here and it's not some mind blowing new revelation. Having said that, what are your thoughts? Is it just semantics? I've read arguments for and against, but thought I'd throw this your way to get the ball rolling.
