New Arrivals at OpenAI | WIRED
Two cofounders of Thinking Machines Lab, Barret Zoph and Luke Metz, are leaving the company to rejoin OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. This departure is a significant blow to Thinking Machines, which has also lost another cofounder, Andrew Tulloch, who joined Meta in November. The reasons behind Zoph's departure are unclear, with conflicting narratives emerging. While some suggest he was fired for unethical conduct, others claim he shared confidential information with competitors. OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, announced the hiring in a memo to staff, stating that Zoph will report directly to her, while Metz and a third staffer, Sam Schoenholz, will work under him. This move is a notable gain for OpenAI, which recently lost its VP of research, Jerry Tworek.
