St. John’s pub owner reads The Hobbit aloud for 10 hours straight in fundraising effort
On Saturday, Allan Bearns, owner of Erin's Pub in St. John's, Newfoundland, read J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit aloud for nearly 10 hours to raise funds for The Gathering Place, a local organization that supports the homeless. Bearns, who has experienced homelessness himself, aimed to raise awareness and funds for the organization, which has seen a tripling of homelessness in the city over the past three years.
It took Bearns nearly 11 hours to read The Hobbit on Saturday, closing the final chapter just before midnight. He raised $1,292 for The Gathering Place as of Sunday morning.
