An Arctic blast is expected to bring life-threatening temperatures and heavy snow to 150 million Americans, with wind chills as low as minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. While trees can crack due to freezing sap, actual explosions are extremely rare. The extreme cold and winter storm are due to a polar vortex disruption.
