Cracking knuckles does not lead to arthritis
Doctor Donald Unger cracked the knuckles of his left hand every day for more than sixty years
Joint cracking, or the manipulation of joints to produce a sharp popping sound, is a common practice often performed by physical therapists, chiropractors, and osteopaths. The cracking mechanism involves the release of nitrogen gas from synovial fluid when the pressure inside the joint cavity is reduced. This process takes about 20 minutes to reset, allowing the joint to crack again. Despite the common belief, scientific evidence does not support the idea that joint cracking causes arthritis.
