Root Bound Monstera?

🪴 How to tell if your monstera is root bound

• Roots growing out of the drainage holes

• Water runs straight through the pot

• Leaves getting smaller or growth stalling

• The plant feels top-heavy or tips easily

• Roots circling the inside of the pot when you peek

First things first: don’t panic!

Monsteras are tough. Being root bound won’t kill them overnight. You’ve got time to do this right instead of rushing and shocking the plant.

Choose the right new pot!

This is where people mess up.

Go 1-2 inches bigger max - do not jump to a huge pot!

Too much extra soil holds water → hello root rot. Monsteras like cozy, not swimming pools.

Loosen, don’t shred

When you take it out:

• Gently loosen the outer roots with your fingers

• If roots are tightly circling, tease them apart a bit

• You can trim a small amount if needed, but don’t go wild & stick to trimming thinner pieces

• Think “massage,” not “haircut.”

Use a chunky, well-draining mix! Probably my best advice for all your tropical plants!

Monsteras hate soggy roots. I like a mix that includes:

• Potting soil

• Orchid bark

• Perlite or pumice

Airy roots = happy plant. My favorite soil is → Dirt Bag

Support matters

If your monstera is getting tall:

• Add a moss pole or support when you repot

• Don’t wait until it’s already leaning like it’s had a long day

• Position the pole close to aerial roots so they can attach themselves - it’s ok to use a little twine or plant tape to help hold it!

• Roots + support = bigger leaves later.

Water smart after repotting - just once & then wait until the top few inches dry out & don’t fertilize for a month or so.

Pro tip - A slightly root-bound monstera often grows better leaves than one with too much room. If it’s healthy and still pushing growth, you can absolutely wait.
