A study from the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Minnesota found that people with type 2 diabetes who drank diet soda did not experience any health benefits when switching to water, and in fact, their HbA1C levels worsened. The SODAS trial, funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, involved 181 participants who were provided with three servings a day of either diet drinks or water for 24 weeks. The study showed that the group drinking artificial sweeteners had slightly better HbA1C levels, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and weight loss compared to the water group. Experts suggest that while diet sodas may not be harmful, the study's findings should not be generalized to all populations or conditions.
