Tommie Lee Wyatt, chronicler of Black Austin life, dies at 88
Tommie 'T.L.' Lee Wyatt, co-founder of The Villager newspaper, passed away at 88, leaving behind a legacy of uplifting Black Austin's achievements and history. He started The Villager in 1973 to highlight positive news and contributions of the African American community, countering the negative portrayals often seen in mainstream media. The newspaper, which is still in print, has contributed significantly to Austin's African American history, recognized by an exhibit at the Austin History Center. Wyatt's son, Thomas, now leads The Villager, continuing his father's mission of promoting equality and representation for East Austin residents.
