How do you cut through 'the noise'

Communities like digg are great, until they reach some kind of scale and turn to shit. I'm interested in folks pushing the edges and the boundaries in tech... in order to find that, I find myself doing a lot of the vetting across multiple platforms and social media. Lots of groups seem to form insular communities, but general "discovery" seems to be broken on the internet. BBS use to solve this a bit, but there seems to no longer be a place/platform of choice?

Is there a better way?
